A dream comes true! CH
Bonaparte von der Emsmuehle Crufts-Winner 2001
All the following started in 1973. Earls Court or Victoria Hall - I do not know for sure after that time - were the first aims of my trips to Crufts in London, I always had longed to go. And later on, when Crufts moved to Birmingham, farther to the north of England. But every time it was the very specific atmosphere of this greatest dog show of the world attracting me to that place again and again, I suppose it might be for the twentieth time by now. The year 2001 was to become quite a special year for all "Overseas". Pet Scheme Travel rendered it feasible - for the first time to go directly to Crufts with one's own dog. The nearer the day came the more the pleasure of anticipation was mixed with nervousness and strain. Have all the formalities been done correctly? The own dog simply had to be in top condition and that meant to spend hours and hours - and that for weeks - in the trimming room and finally when the day of confirmation advanced the decision that there was no need to be ashamed of the result of all that lot of work.. But then the big disappointment - two days before our departure Crufts was cancelled because of the MFD. A new date was announced, but what horror, it was the Friday before the General Meeting of the Klub für Terrier, Mrs Kirch being the treasuress had to take part in any case.
A short and restless night in the usual hotel. An early start to get to the show and then - the Irish were the last to be judged - that meant to wait, and wait, and wait! Then at 14:00 hours the "Puppy Class" was the first to be called up. In such a straining situation minutes easily seem to become hours, but finally "Open Dogs" were invited in the ring. Bonaparte did his best, he seemed to feel that this was a very special day. In a situation like this it is quite good knowing that on the other side of the lead there is a dog you may rely on at every time. He really knew what he wanted, presented himself in a mixture of nobility and temperament and last but not least leaving no doubt that he wanted to be winner. And then there was the moment when the judge, Mr K. Anderson - a successful Irish breeder himself - shook my hand and presented the CC-card to me. Such a moment you cannot expressed in words. A dream wanted for a long time had become reality! Within the next few seconds I once more remembered all the 30 years of breeding and living with my Irish terriers and I experienced a deep gratitude for those wonderful years. And I thought of that moment in 1987 when Ch. Maghill of Ben´s Heir, already in my ownership at that time, became Crufts Winner with G. Clark as handler, and of that of 1998 when Ch. Brazan Riesling, this time handled my myself, repeated that success. But to stand here with a dog of my own breeding and to win, this moment surpassed all those experienced up to now - even the triumphs of the last two years Bonaparte had achieved in international shows, his successes as Best in Show and last but not least his numerous titles as winner of the day. "Bonaparte von der Emsmühle" had become Crufts Winner 2001 and thus writing history even in Great Britain. To be sure, you will not have much time for joy in a such a situation, for reality will catch up with you pretty soon. Judging is going on and once more full concentration and . . . . ."Best of Breed"! At the same time the order of an official: "You are in hurry, you have to go to the main ring". And that meant there is no time to enjoy that success with our friends but to quickly get all things together and to hurry to the group judge. However, when I arrived there the time schedule had been delayed due a threat of bomb - good luck for us. Henceforth Mrs Kirch took charge of the handling of Bonaparte, and for me it was a splendid moment to drink a fine and well-deserved English beer completely relaxed and to observe all that followed. At 21:00 hours the show ended and we were tired and exhausted, but happy. Now it was time to immediately get into the car and return to Germany to the General Meeting in Kelsterbach. Arrival after a trip of 950 kms; it is Saturday 7:00 hours - three hours of time for a little bit of sleep and then to the Bürgerhaus (Citizen Hall) in Kelsterbach. On Sunday the General Meeting ended at 20:00 hours and we could return for home. And even these last 200 kms we still were driving "on cloud no. 7".
Judge: Mr Kevin Anderson
For
us an unforgetable event and our greatest wish comes true.
Successful breeding is not a matter of luck! Best wishes all over the world to all our friends and enthusiasts of this fantastic breed, Karina Kirch and Hans Gruettner

Hound Group
Later on, when judging the groups "Riesling" was a worthy representative of our breed, too. He won the Terrier Group and finally became "BEST IN SHOW" of all Irish breeds. Once again a great success and quite a good Advertisement for our race. Therefore, the evening passed by in a very good mood. For about 7.30 p.m. a dinner had been organised for everyone present at the "Forrest Little Golf Club, Swords". This evening lasted a bit longer than others did - and it was a very fine evening together with the Irish breeders and the Deegan family. On Sunday special trainings were offered to the breeders of the different races. The training for the Irish Terrier breeders was held by Tracy Deegan-Foyle and Jimmy Sweeney. Both of them did quite a good job. The essential points of the Standards had been explained, yet the schedule of time was that close-fitted that there was only little space for all further discussions. But "don't worry", the enthusiasts of the Irish Terriers did make up for it "quite long" in the Coachman Pub. All in all it had been a very nice weekend, because Ireland always is good for a visit!

At the two shows in Koge (DTK) and Copenhagen (DKK) this September the German breeder of Irish Terriers, Hans Gruettner, came to Denmark with his import GH Maghill of Ben´s Heir - and that was some Irish Terrier!!
Yes, as a Dane I do think it was a little bit sad that the top honour at those two very big shows had to go to a dog from another country - but when it went to Germany with Hans Gruettner and Maghill I can only say one thing and congratulate them: The best dog wins!! Maghill caught your eye the minute you looked down the line of competitors - he was so self-confident, showing like a bomb and calmly waiting to be pointed to the winner´s podium. What a pleasure it was to see him win both days. I spoke to Hans Gruettner after the shows and he told that the world-famous all-rounder judge Mr. Joe Braddon once said to him: "In a life of a man there comes one dog and to this dog he will say Mr. Dog" - for Hans Gruettner "Mr. Dog" is Maghill. He bought him from Mr. H. Davies at the age of 8 months and left him in England for what was to become a very succsessful show carrier. The English Championship was won under wordfamous Irish Terrier breeders such as Miss Norah Woodifield and Mrs. E. Howard-Jones, the last named also giving him BOB at Crufts in ´87. After this Hans Gruettner took Maghill to Germany and he continued his success on the Continent! Maghill is unbeaten in the breed but for one exception and today he has 7 Best in Shows. He has further placements in the Terrier Group at the big important Kennel Club shows in Amsterdam and the Bundessieger show in Dortmund and is now - obviously - also an International Champion. That he is also a success at stud is proven plenty by his winning off-spring. |
